D1 is actually a digital video tape format using the CCIR601 standard to record 4:2:2 component video on 19mm tape. Currently the highest quality video tape format generally available. The first digital video tape format, hence D1.

For ReplayTV purposes, we only use D1 to refer to the resolutions used.

Standard Half D1 Resolution D1 Resolution
NTSC 352x480 720x480
PAL/SECAM 352x576 720x576

NOTE: You may also see "cropped D1", which is 704x480 (NTSC) or 704x576 (PAL/SECAM), which is useful because the 8 pixels on either edge of the video frame aren't supposed to contain useful information.
